OUR CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF TIEN POLONIDIS We are sad to report the passing of one of our women’s cricket pioneers, Tien Polonidis overnight on October 27 after a long illness. On behalf of Moonee Valley Cricket Club players, committee and supporters, we offer our sincere condolences to Tien’s husband, MVCC Life Member Jim Polonidis and their daughter Lexi. At left: Tien Polonidis with husband Jim on one of her most recent club outings - the wedding of Matt and Vanessa Thomas in May. Tien was a member of our inaugural women’s team in 2007/08 and played 46 games for the Valley, hitting 307 runs and taking 30 wickets. She’s the only player in our 50-year history to make a clean sweep of a season’s awards – winning the Women’s Firsts batting, bowling, fielding and Most Valuable Player in 2009/10. Tien was our Women’s Firsts captain in 2008/09 and 2009/10. While she took to the field in Round 1 in our first-ever women’s team in 2007/08, Tien actually made her debut for Moonee Valley a season earlier. On February 24, 2007, at our second home ground Debneys Park, Tien played with the Sevenths in the Moreland Moonee Valley Cricket Association in Round 15 in an easy win over East Coburg. While illness has curtailed Tien’s activities over the past couple of years, she has continued to be a regular visitor to Ormond Park and a committed supporter of our club. We need to gather around Jim and Lexi and extend them our love and support in this difficult time. *The funeralis 11.30am Friday. Due to COVID restrictions attendance at the Church is strictly family-invite. People can attend via videolink at www.vividstream.live/tien-polonidis . The family is planning an event to celebrate Tien's life when restrictions are eased.
OUR 2020/21 WISDEN - IT'S OUT NOW!
Our 2020/21 Senior Wisden is now available on our website, listing all the stats from the season just gone, plus all our records and milestones. Photos, season in review, and our highs and lows are all in there. It’s 132 pages of must-read info, so sit down and tuck in. There’s a link to the annual Wisdens going back to 1983/84 under the “Players & Wisdens” tab on the black bar at the top of our website. You can go there and look back through history year by year. And what can you search for in the 2020/21 Wisden?
*Which current player has been selected eight times in our Wisden Team of the Year? *How many players who’ve played 20 games or more have a career batting average above 50? One’s a current player. *Which current player has a career bowling average under 10? Only two players with 20 games or more have achieved this. *What record did our women’s team set in winning their Premiership? (See Page 83). *Which three players each got a pair on the same day in the same game? Hint: 2018/19.
Read through the Wisden and find the answers, and a whole lot more. We’re all making our history together.
MOONEE VALLEY CRICKET –
SENIOR TRAINING
HAS STARTED
In line with advice from Cricket Victoria, Moonee Valley’s senior training commenced. The advice, based on information from the State Government’s revised COVID-19 roadmap, is that organized training – nets, centre wicket and match simulation – can commence on Friday, October 22. Senior coach Glen Courts will be running a senior training session at Ormond Park this Friday from 5pm and is encouraging anyone who wants a hit to attend. After this, senior training will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm, except for Melbourne Cup week (Wednesday and Thursday training). Our VTCA, Mercantile and NWMCA seasons are still scheduled to start on the November 13/14 weekend. We plan to hold a training session for our junior grades on Friday, October 29 – when hopefully we have more clarification in terms of immunization requirements – particularly as players in the Under 10 and Under 12 age groups are not eligible for vaccination. We hope to be able to distribute further junior advice later this week. We have had no indication as yet as to when we will be given access to our clubrooms or even to toilet or change facilities, so players attending training should be wearing their training gear. We will have QR code sign-in posters and hand sanitiser. There is still no advice on whether vaccination will be mandatory to participate in community cricket, but Cricket Victoria is strongly encouraging all players or participants to get the jabs in anticipation. There is no limit on numbers at training, but social distancing requirements still apply and Cricket Victoria advises the State Government requests that only those who need to be at training (players and coaches) attend. As part of our senior preparation, we have organized one (or two) practice matches at Ormond Park with Haig Fawkner on Saturday, November 6 – on the proviso that Victoria reaches its 80% vaccination target and the Government further eases restrictions. Cricket Victoria and the Victorian Government have hinted at needing to be fully vaccinated to play cricket this year. They haven't made it compulsory yet, however, if you feel comfortable providing your information now it will allow us to move forward more quickly if vaccinations become compulsory. There is also a possibility that anyone entering the pavilion will need to be vaccinated, whether you are a player or not. If you feel comfortable, please complete the information in this form (click here), including uploading your vaccination certificate. Your information will be held securely with the club secretary, Michael Ozbun, until the time that it is needed. If it is not needed, the information will be destroyed. For the previous update and other advice on the cricket season, click HERE . Thank you in advance for your support and we are looking forward to playing cricket!
We’ve appointed our senior captains for 2021/22. They are: Firsts – Jack Newman; Seconds – Matt Esmore and Michael Ozbun; Thirds – Rahul “Sunny” Sharma; Fourths – Domenic Gibaldi; Fifths – Dominic Rettino and Paddy Shelton; Sixths – Allan Cumming; Sevenths – Bill Nimorakiotakis (provisional); Eighths – waiting advice on our VIT partners. Their phone numbers are listed under “Club Office Bearers and Officials” under the “Club News” tab on the black bar at the top of the website. Senior coach Glen Courts was reappointed at the end of the 2020/21 season, while Bede Gannon has been reappointed Chairman of Selectors.

Our 50th anniversary ball - postponed to January
The Moonee Valley Cricket Club 50th anniversary ball, which had been booked for November 27, has been shifted back to January 29 due to the uncertainty over coronavirus restrictions.
The cricket world is still unclear on a firm season start date or the restrictions and requirements that will be in force as the community works through the vaccination targets, so it was prudent to postpone this major event.
It will still be held at the Ultima Function Centre in Keilor Park, and the details other than the dates in the flier are still correct.
The gala ball and announcement of the Team of the Half Century and the Teams of the Decade will be followed by a Back to Ormond Park and major raffle event on the following day.
