Fourths through to the Grand Final
Moonee Valley's Fourth Eleven made it through to the C Mats Grand Final after a strong win over Royal Park Reds on March 3 & 4 - our first senior Grand Final since 2002/03.
Pictured here is the victorious team: L-R (back) William Lai, Wayne Nicol, Tim Fisher, Steven Bonfa, Murray Walker, Nigel Walker, Jesse Felle and Robbie Ball. (Front) Ben Thomas, Sunny Sharma, Bob Sciacchitano and Steven Ball.
It was the highlight of a big weekend of cricket for Moonee Valley, with the Seconds making the finals after a big outright win, and the Under 16s crushing East Keilor and also snatching last spot in the finals.
And our First Eleven finished on a high note, also recording a comfortable win over Sunshine YCW.
Our Fourths - Moonee Valley White - finished fourth on the ladder after winning the last two games, and came up against the powerful Royal Park Reds batting line-up. Tim Fisher took a wicket with the first ball of the match - a beautiful inswinging yorker - and we never looked back, cleaning Reds up for 156. We were 1/40 at the end of the first day.
Captain and opener Sunny Sharma vowed to be out there still when we reached the target of 157, and he was true to his word. Sunny hit a magnificent unbeaten 63, and the hard-hitting Jesse Felle put Reds to the sword with a controlled but quickfire 51 not out, when they still thought they had a sniff.
Our team was a blend of youth and experience, with six of the Eleven - Murray Walker, Nigel Walker, Steven Bonfa, William Lai, Tim Fisher and Jesse Felle - having come through our juniors. And three of those ex-juniors - Tim, Will and Murray - have more than 50 senior games under their belts.
The Seconds stormed into the finals with an outright win over Sunshine YCW, courtesy of nine wickets for the match from Iraklis Kolokithas - another graduate of our juniors.
And with a team that boasts multiple premiership winners in Ian Denny, Darren Nagle and Sandro Capocchi - we can only say to the opposition - beware! The sleeping giant has awoken!
Our Under 16s recorded their best win of the season to snatch the final spot in the finals. They crushed East Keilor for 45 in a one-day match, then breezed past the total in the 12th over with just two wickets down.
Our Under 14 Black and Gold teams won their matches to confirm spots in the finals, while we also had some excellent wins from our Under 12 sides.
Our Mighty Fighting Eights and our Under 14 girls are also in the finals.
