Welcome back, Mick
by Charlie Walker
It was although nothing had changed. Capocchi and Harvey opened the batting, with Denny and Nagle further down the order.
The halcyon days of Moonee Valley, when Premierships were there for the taking.
But fast-forward a few years, and it was Moonee Valley's Fifths, giving a solid grounding to our young players on turf, and ot the A Grade side carrying all before it.
Welcome back Michael Harvey, who played his first game for Moonee Valley since the 2005/06 season, when the Fifths took on Bentleigh in the Mercantile Cricket Association Sunday one-day grade.
But we were still playing at home on one of Spider's excellent pitches at Ormond Park, and indeed it was Michael Harvey and Sandro Capocchi striding out to open the batting.
Sandro didn't put too many on the board, but Mick played like it was just week that he was slaying First Eleven attacks, putting on an imperious 89 before being caught on the boundary.
Egbert wasn't needed with the bat, Spud made a half-century and Moonee Valley set a total of 5/233 which Bentleigh couldn't chase down.
Along the way, Mick had important partnerships some members of the next generation of Moonee Valley stars - Jack Newman and Charles Aitken.
It was Mick's 247th game with Moonee Valley, and while he's taken a while to move to his next milestone from 200, we're all keen for him to become our seventh player to reach the 250-game mark. At one stage, life member and past Valley coach Mick looked like he would be the first there.
It took some urging from coach Rex Bennett and from other life members, but it was wonderful to see Michael Harvey back in the Moonee Valley colors again.
And if he continues to have a hit when available in the Fifths, it will be wonderful experience and excellent coaching for our up-and-coming young guns.
Mick, welcome back from all of us.
