Valley cricketers hit the footy draft

by Charlie Walker

Congratulations to past (and still not retired) Moonee Valley cricketers Peter Wright and Reilly O'Brien for their selection in the AFL draft over the past week.

Peter Wright (left) - pick 8 in the national draft.

Both Peter and Reilly played their junior cricket at Moonee Valley, then progressed to short careers in our senior cricket ranks before their football priority called them away.

Peter, who was taken by Gold Coast at Pick 8 in the national draft, played 21 senior games of cricket for the Valleys, for 218 runs @ 18.17 and took 17 wickets @ 14.0 with his fast rising balls off his great height. He Reilly O'Brienplayed four of those games in our Firsts, including the North A semi final in 2011/12.

Reilly (right), who was taken by Adelaide at Pick 9 in the rookie draft, played 16 senior games for 165 runs @ 20.63, and took 10 wickets.

While the two teens have moved interstate, the family connection at Moonee Valley continues.

Peter's dad Norm still plays with our Mighty Fighting Sixths, while Reilly's older brothers John and Sam have each played more than 50 games. And mum Jenny O'Brien was one of our women's team pioneers, with 34 games under her belt.

Good luck from all your teammates at Moonee Valley!
