Valley cricketer to make AFL debut

Past Moonee Valley cricketer Sam Philp is listed to make his AFL debut with Carlton this round.

Sam played two games with the Valley Sixths in 2016/17 and 17/18, for 61 runs at an average of 61.0. An accomplished wicketkeeper, he also took two catches in his first game.

Sam had the pleasure of playing with his father Steve in his first match.

Steve worked with Sixths stalwarts Dom Rettino and Paddy Shelton, hence he jumped at the chance for a game with his workmates, with his son included.

Paddy suggests that Sam will credit all his development in sport to his games at Moonee Valley, but we’re not quite sure.

Other AFL footballers with a Moonee Valley cricket connection include Adelaide’s Reilly O’Brien and Gold Coast’s Peter Wright, who both played junior and senior cricket with us.
