Dom Rettino background and history - comments in the citation for his Lindsay Jones Best Clubman award
Has made a significant contribution on and off the field over a number of years, but particularly this year.
- Joined Moonee Valley in the 2016/17 season in our Sixths, and immediately began pitching in. He didn’t need to be on the committee to make his mark.
At right: Dominic Rettino proudly holds the Shield acknowledging his 2021/22 Lindsay Jones Best Clubman award. - He was making plenty of marks on the field. His first game for the club was against his team’s nemesis, Airport West-St Christophers. We had an easy win – and Dom Rettino took 3/24 and top scored with 32 not out.
- His squad played two seasons as our Sixths, then were promoted to the Fifths. He’s now a two-time premiership player – with the Fifths in 2019/20, and doubling up in the Fourths the following season.
- Joined the committee in 2020/21, and readily identified areas where we needed to improve. He had leadership material written all over him.
- Identified the need to be more meticulous in collecting memberships and other money due to the club. Planning and organising functions, getting into the canteen and making salads and such – he was a breath of fresh air.
At right: Committee members Brendan Rhodes (left) and Michael Ozbun listen as Sixths captain Allan Cumming talks about his season. - Our Sixths/Fifths first became a feature of our club in 2014/15, when Paddy Shelton and a couple of other guys having a kick of the footy at Ormond Park were encouraged to pull on the whites.
- Dom joined them two seasons later, and took it on as his mission to ensure the evolving group became an integrated and integral part of our club. After-match barbecues, attendance at functions such as our reverse raffle this year – Dom was the key to rounding up his teammates.
- The majority of the players who have pulled on the whites for our Sixths/Fifths have been country boys, and Dom played an important role in ensuring they felt at home in our city club.
- The squad has been a constant at Moonee Valley for eight years, but many of the boys have indicated they may go on to new pursuits next season.
At right: David Lubansky won the MVP for the Sixths with excellent performances with bat, ball and in the field - and he's still an Under 12s player! - Sadly for us, Dom is in the same boat, and since early this season has been living in Geelong. An auditor by profession, he’s a whiz with figures. He’s still trying to do the sums of how he can balance living in Geelong with his passion for us at Moonee Valley.
- He’s captained or co-captained the team for three seasons. Dom brought up his 100-game milestone during this season, in our big win in the quarter final over Flemington Colts.
- He has a century against Haig Fawkner in 2017/18, and best bowling figures of 4/7 – in the 2019/20 Premiership win over Northern Lions.
- But while he’s been a sterling performer on the field across his 100 games, it’s Dom’s contribution off the field that is in the spotlight tonight.
- As the winner of the 2021/22 Lindsay Jones Best Clubman award, Dom Rettino we salute you.
