Our women’s teams set to double
Moonee Valley has made the bold decision to field two teams in the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association for the 2008/09 season.
Buoyed by the success of our program in our inaugural year, a July 2 meeting of women’s team members, club officials and other supporters voted unanimously to carry out the work to establish the second team.
Only four of the regular 16 players who were part of the roster for most of the season were unable to attend the meeting, and all have indicated their intention to play on.
Inaugural captain Jenny O’Brien said that faced with the choice between a single team with players regularly balloted out or a growth of the program to accommodate extra players into two teams, the way ahead was clear.
Two of our players: Tanya Intagliata (top)
and Victoria Thorneycroft (bottom).
To assist the growth and development of women’s cricket at Moonee Valley, the meeting – backed by the Club’s committee – resolved to advertise to appoint a senior playing coach.
The Club is also keen to recruit some experienced players to help in the development of women’s cricket.
Club president Charlie Walker said the efforts of the women’s team to start from scratch in the 2007/08 pre-season and to go from strength to strength with a strong and growing squad had been magnificent – culminating in Moonee Valley winning the VWCA Spirit of Cricket Award, voted by the umpires.
He said the recruitment campaign would continue to tap the areas that had produced the majority of the inaugural season’s players – mothers of junior players at the Club, spouses and partners of senior men’s players and teenage girls coming through our junior ranks.
The recruitment of other players – either experienced players or women and girls wanting to get in to the sport for the first time – would help ensure balanced teams.
We are planning to play the second team in the same grade as our existing team – the North & West One Day grade – with both teams to be fixtured to play Sunday home games.
Details of the coach role are listed in the News pages on our website.
