Our condolences on the passing of Jim Cusack
by Charlie Walker
The Moonee Valley Cricket Club extends our sincere condolences to the family of Jim Cusack, who passed away today.
Jim was one of the two Moonee Valley councillors, along with Nicole Marshall, who were instrumental in us getting our new pavilion at Ormond Park in 2019.
Our dream had been low on the list of Council priorities until Jim took up the cause, and had it elevated to the top of the schedule.
He and Nicole were strong advocates all the way through the project, calling meetings if differences arose between the cricket and football clubs and the council officers - invariably endorsing our concerns.
Jim was heavily involved in the Moonee Valley Football Club and Moonee Valley Bowls Club and had been a steadfast supporter of our cricket club as well, along with his partner Helene McNamara.
Jim and Helene's son Kilian played his junior cricket at Moonee Valley, and also played seven senior games.
Our Moonee Valley premiership captain Brett Curran, a close friend of Jim Cusack, wrote this for the football club:
Sadly we lost Jim Cusack today. For those of you who didn’t know Jim, he was a massive figure in our area. He was Mayor and Councillor at Moonee Valley for many years. He was a stalwart of the Bowls Club and long term supporter of the cricket and football clubs. He was a pivotal advocate for our many attempts and ultimately successful bid for the new pavilion and change rooms. Fiercely advocating for rooms to ensure women could play sport. More than that he was a constant supporter for many years buying two memberships even though his sons Aidan & Kilian had long since finished playing. He was the big man with the Father Christmas beard in the pocket lamenting the performance of the ref (as he called the umpires but never with rancour) and cheering on our women and men.
Jim was a good man, a fierce and loyal advocate for his community and a person of unwavering commitment to social justice and equality. And he loved the Moonee Valley football club. His company was always a treasured experience.
He was last down at Ormond Park to see the Valley men play Rupertswood with his beloved partner Hélène McNamara.
An Irish Australian,
Suaimhneas síoraí do Jim Mhór
