Matty makes the grade with a big ton
Matt Thomas brought up his maiden century for Moonee Valley in style on February 3, with an imperious knock to help the Sevenths run down the Pascoe Vale total for the loss of only two wickets.
Matt is shown here pointing to the spot on our list of century-makers where his name will now slot in.
A former Under 16s captain, Matt has shown glimpses of his ability in the Firsts in recent seasons, but this was the first time he had grabbed an attack by the scruff of the neck and dominated.
Batting at No. 3, Matt came to the wicket with just one run on the board when Ian Denny fell early. His 131 not out saw us pass Pascoe Vale's total of 9/200 with two overs to spare. Matt was well supported by Simon Payton's 52not out - Simon's third consecutive unbeaten 50. Matt, who had been unavailable the previous week in the first week of the two-day grades, also took three wickets and a sharp catch to help give the Sevenths some momentum as they fight towards a possible finals spot.
*Matt was one of a group of Moonee Valley players who showed some fight with the bat over the weekend.
The Fifths had an honorable loss at home at Ormond Park, with Under 16 player Jacob Lumsden (50) and new man Sharafat Ali (57) among the runs down the order.
In the Mighty Fighting Eighths, Dean Lawson (90 not out) and Joe Carroll (67) put on a 156-run opening stand to take the points over Avondale Heights.
The previous weekend, in the first day of the two-day game, First Eleven players Arosha Perera (100), coach Vik Chand (81 not out) and Darren "Spud" Nagle (55) were among the runs in a big winning total.
Ben Thomas - brother of century-maker Matt - made 50 in the narrow Third Eleven loss.
