Match-saver Sandra's superb knock
by
Moonee Valley's Sandra Verschoor kept the season alive for our Women's team after we were in all sorts of trouble against Youlden Parkville on March 3.
Missing two of our regular stars to illness and injury, we went into the Round 15 match with the minimum six players.
While Youlden Parkville were sporting enough to loan us two fielders, with just six Valley girls we didn't have the flexibility of bowling rotations and strategies.
Jane Greenshields kept us in the match with three wickets - all bowled - including a double wicket maiden, and Sandra chimed in with a late LBW to remove their second-highest score.
However, we were still up against it when Youlden Parkville finished their 20 overs on 6/135.
At right: Sandra Verschoor wielded the willow to great effect - her 77 not out got us into the finals.
We lost wickets at 10, 58 and 73, and after two wickets fell with the score on 82, we were down to our last hope - Sandra, who had earlier retired on 23 before coming back in when all our other batters had their turn.
Sandra hit 13 fours in her knock of 77not out, which only ended when we agreed to finish the game - the final round before finals - with more than four overs to go.
She played the full array of shots as she pulled our season out of the fire, with three fours in succession teasing the fielder at fine leg - hitting it finer each time the fielder moved around to where the previous shot passed.
The innings takes Sandra's batting tally to 333 for the season - for once out.
Sandra is the third member of her family to play cricket at Moonee Valley - husband Howard Norsetter used his baseball skills to great effect in six games in our one-day grades, and son Joshua Norsetter has played more than 120 senior games for the Valley.
