Jonty's Jottings - November 22-24

by Brendan Rhodes

While last week's report was all about records and an amazing senior debut for Zac Nilsson, this week it is all about a stunning weekend from Dejan Gilevski and Riley Walsh, plus some more great news for Josh Norsetter.

After taking devastating match figures of 7/8, in an outright win for Under 16 (2) on Friday night, Dejan backed up in 6th Grade on Saturday to make 54no and 23 to almost single-handedly rescue us from outright defeat against the Royal Park Reds. You should be as proud of yourself, mate, as I and everyone else is of you!

Riley had never made more than 30 in an inning before, but turned in a remarkable effort in the same Under 16 (2) game, hitting a two off the final ball of the innings to finish on 100 not out! He hit 12 fours and one six in his brilliant innings. Well done Riley, we'd love to see you continue that form in both juniors and seniors!

A week after claiming his 100th senior wicket, Josh has been named in the NWMCA Under-16 representative squad for the Bietzel Shield and VMCU carnivals in January! Congratulations mate, that's well deserved for all your hard work.

Luca McMonagle also recorded his highest score for Moonee Valley, cracking 58 in a terrific role backing up Riley.

And a big mention to Max Talone as well, who made his senior debut in 7th Grade on Sunday - the first of many senior games for our great club.

Overall, our 1s, 2s and 3s and NWMCA T20 teams had big wins, but 4s, 5s, 6s and 7s suffered convincing defeats.

In the juniors, the U16 (2) got their outright win as mentioned and U10s also got up, while U16 (1), U14 and U12 won silver medals in their games.

Here's the results from the past few days:

1st Grade - Two Dayer - Moonee Valley 8/466 def Bellbridge 153 by 313 runs. Our bowlers made the record score count, outlasting a determined batting display from Bellbridge to seal a huge victory. Sameera Vithana (4/46) and Shiwantha Kumara (3/18) led the way in a great team bowling performance. Ladder Position: 3rd

1st Grade NWMCA Twenty20 - Moonee Valley 6/192 def Ascot Vale 8/138 by 54 runs. A dominant performance from start to finish to remain undefeated in the competition, with Luke Brock (45no and 2/30) being the standout. Anthony Cafari (32 and 2/18) was also terrific, while Sam Walker (32) and Ben Thomas (26) performed well with the bat. Ladder Position: 5th

2nd Grade - Two Dayer - Moonee Valley 217 def Bellbridge 130 by 87 runs. Once again the bowlers backed up a solid batting performance to seal the victory. Bede Gannon (4/48) and Stephen Ward (2/18) led the way with the ball. Ladder Position: 3rd

3rd Grade - 45 overs - Moonee Valley 0/80 def Flemington 76 by 10 wickets with 151 balls to spare. A powerful way to bounce back after consecutive losses. Josh Norsetter (2/7), Dom Gibaldi (3/18), and Paul Bannister (2/9) were basically unplayable before Matt Esmore (35no) and Sagar Bhatia (32no) made short work of the target. Ladder Position: 3rd

4th Grade - 45 overs - Moonee Valley 95 lost to Thornbury Turf Strokers 9/191 by 96 runs. The 4s were brought back to Earth in a convincing loss to the ladder leaders. Debutant Jay Patel (3/32 and 27) was the star, while Sagar Bhatia (2/28), Josh Norsetter (2/40) and Joseph Lynch (0/28) bowled well. The batting, however, was very disappointing. Ladder Position: 8th

5th Grade - 35 overs - Moonee Valley 84 lost to Donnybrook 9/228 by 144 runs. The Shiners fell to their first loss of the season, being unable to overcome the absence of eight key players. We had Donnybrook in trouble at 6/78, but it all went downhill from there. Cassidy Box (4/22) and debutant Shavaan Khan (2/45) led the bowling, while only debutant Claude Bevilacqua (38) offered any resistance with the bat as we handed top spot over to the Brookers. Ladder Position: 3rd

6th Grade - Two Dayer - Moonee Valley 123 and 8/123 lost to Royal Park Reds 282 and 3dec/89 on 1st innings by 149 runs. Dejan Gilevski the hero! He made 54no when the second top scorer only reached 15 in the first innings. Markus Harris (2/25) took his match figures to 7/108 as the Reds slogged to set a target, but they batted too long and Dejan (23) backed up his great first dig to reach 77 runs before being dismissed. This time he had support from Murray Price (34) and Markus (22), while Shaun Rayment (6no) blocked it out to save the game at the death. Ladder Position: 6th

7th Grade - 35 overs - Moonee Valley 9/180 lost to Kealba-Green Gully 7/250 by 70 runs. Great stuff from young Max Talone, who took 0/15 off four overs in his first game of senior cricket. Well done! Luke Brock (3/15) and Dan Comande (2/45) picked up most of the wickets. Luke (35), Steve Esmore (26) and Michael Ozbun (22) batted well, while Max got to bat briefly with his dad John Talone (16).  Ladder Position: 8th

Under 16 (1) - Two Dayer - Moonee Valley 95 and 3/80 lost to Aberfeldie 5/357 on 1st innings by 262 runs. A fair bit of fight shown by our boys to stop Aberfeldie getting an outright win - you'll learn and be better for that gutsy effort! Lukas Mizis (22) and Luka Nimorakiotakis (21) did well in the first innings and Dylan Pleban (35) and Josh Norsetter (21no) led the way in the second. Ladder Position: 6th

Under 16 (2) - Two Dayer - Moonee Valley 6dec/219 def Flemington 59 and 52 outright by an innings and 108 runs. As mentioned above, sensational individual performances everywhere! Riley Walsh (100no) turned his 31no into a maiden 50 and then maiden 100, Luca McMonagle (58) got his first half-century for the club, Dejan Gilevski (5/2) backed up his 2/6 last week with a five-wicket haul and Jack Cumming bowled a wicket maiden to seal maximum points.  Ladder Position: 3rd

Under 14 (1) - Two Dayer - Moonee Valley 129 and 15 lost to Aberfeldie 5dec/326. There are positives to take out of this game. Cullen Morrissy (21) and Noah Nimorakiotakis (14) batted well last week, Jordy Walsh (2/57), Lachie Monger (1/25), William Hellwig (1/42) and Cullen (1/48) got among the wickets and Joel Sheridan and Hayagreev Bashyam took catches. The entire team can hold your heads high because you never gave up. Rest assured the club is doing everything it can to help you enjoy your cricket. Ladder Position: 8th

Under 12 (4) - T20 - Moonee Valley 9/65 lost to Greenvale Roos 6/91 by 26 runs. Angus Hughes (12) and James Blanch (11ret, including a big six!) batted beautifully, while James Cole (2/2) had a great stint with the ball. Ladder Position: 5th

Under 10 - One-dayer - Moonee Valley 6/130 def Flemington (1) 7/103 by 27 runs. Two wins in a row for the Under-10s. Luke Sevenson(25), Levi Richardson(14) with two sixes in a row, Ben Simon (14), Lachy (10), Andy (9), Nicholas Blackmore (4no) and Luke Blanch (4no) all did a great job. We then kept Flemington under our score with good bowling and fielding on a small fast ground. Luke Sevenson(1/7 and two run outs), Luke Blanch bowled tightly with a great last over. Andy (0/2) and Isaac (1/9) bowled accurately as did Beau Grogan (0/9). Levi Richardson won the man of the match award with 1/9, plus some very good wicketkeeping and batting. Nicholas Blackmore also kept well in the first 10 overs and batted well opening the batting against a good bowling side. Well done on another good game. Thanks for such a detailed report guys!
