Our history

Established with a single team in 1970, the Moonee Valley Cricket Club has grown to include 8 senior teams and 13 junior sides in 2006/07. For the 2005/06 season, the club had more than 270 players.

The two highest grades of the Cricket Club joined the Victorian Turf Cricket Association in 2002/03, after dominating in local competitions for more than three decades. The VTCA gives a far higher standard of cricket for the top players in the club, competing against the best turf cricketers from around Melbourne.

The third, fourth and fifth senior grades remain in the Moreland Moonee Valley Cricket Association two-day competition, where they enjoy a high standard of cricket. The sixth and seventh senior grades are in the MMVCA One-day competition. And the eighth senior grade is in the NWCA one-day comp.

In its first 28 years of existence the Cricket Club was in the North West Cricket Association, where it won 15 senior Premierships – with the First XI winning 10 of them. It then moved its senior teams across to the MMVCA, which offered turf grades.

Moonee Valley Cricket Club has also seen a rapid expansion in its junior ranks, which compete in the North West Cricket Association.

It first fielded juniors in 1996, when it commenced with one Under 10 and one Under 12 team. It has grown steadily since then, with extra teams in higher age groups being created as the original boys grew.

The Club has now won an Under 12 flag in 2005/06, an Under 14 C premiership in 2004/05 and an Under 14 Girls premiership in 2003/04. For the first time in the Club's history, in 2006/07 we won two flags in a season - our Under 16s and our Under 12 Green.

For more information on the earlier history of the club, see the "timelines" section in the Senior Wisden.
