English import James Wolfenden (right) made an immediate impact in his first game for Moonee Valley, becoming only the fourth player in the history of our Club to make a century on debut.
James, out for a "year in the colonies" with close mate Sean Duckworth after finishing university together, found himself in the hard-wicket Sevenths following a shuffle of teams for Round 1. The abandonment of three of our four turf grades due to pitch preparation issues meant that a spot opened up for both lads in the Sevenths.
James in particular took full advantage.
Playing at home on the Ormond Park East oval on October 8, he opened the batting with senior coach Lou Raffaele against the Singh Sahba team. James got off to a flier, with the ball bludgeoned to all parts of the ground.
James looked imperious in posting his 103 not out, retiring in accordance with th NWMCA one-day comp rules.
Moonee Valley continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over, with Anthony Cafari posting 67 and Daniel Comande going out off the last ball of the innings for 97, while seeking the club the boundary that would have also brought up his ton. 
Along the way, Daniel passed the 1000 senior run milestone for the Valley. Dan clubbed eight sixes in his knock, which gets him into the Wisden hall of fame.
Moonee Valley's total of 4/339 compulsory close was our highest-ever score in the Sevenths, entered this season in the Sunday one-day comp.
Singh Sabha got off to a promising start as it bravely tried to reel in the total, but lost a lot of its wickets in the middle overs to be all out for 182.
James showed that fielding was just as easy as batting, with a spectacular one-handed catch on the boundary. His mate Sean wasn't to be outdone, picking up his first wicket for the Valleys.
And another former UK resident making his debut for Moonee Valley, Shiraz Badurdeen, also demonstrated sublime fielding skills to make a difficult catch look easy.

MOONEE VALLEY
           

Moonee Valley celebrated the Richmond AFL Premiership in style, even though the Tiger supporters were an endangered species down at Ormond Park on September 30.
About four dozen Valley diehards - and not a Crows supporter in sight - watched the game on the big screen while we enjoyed the match. Fast bowler Chris Pollock and partner Sam Milazzi enjoyed the day.It was a foregone conclusion early, and so a lot of our younger senior players availed themselves of a practice session, with stump cricket in the nets holding more interest than the footy.

We had a number of juniors pass through during the course of the afternoon to try their skills on the jumping castle obstacle course.

Moonee Valley sent a strong team up to Barham for a pre-season hit on turf on September 16, and we came away witha good win.
The weekend was an opportunity for players in or vying for the top grades to have some time away together, and it certainly worked. Our bowlers got a good go, and batsmen got some quality time in the middle.
The post-match bonding was also a  highlight of the weekend.

Moonee Valley legend Sean O'Kane came across for the weekend from his home patch at Barooga - where we played our pre-season on turf leading up to the 2016/18 year - and a good time was had by all.

THE SCENE FOR OUR

JUNIORS

Moonee Valley juniors got a taste of the future when senior players ran a training clinic at Ormond Park on September 10.
Coach Lou Raffaele and a group of senior players took our up-and-comers through their paces, checking and advising on their techniques and giving our young Valley boys some handy instruction on how to continue improving their game.

The seniors are taking a bigger role with the juniors this season, assisting our Director of Junior Cricket, senior player Channa DeSilva.
Anthony Cafari and Stephen Esmore - who both came through our junior program - are taking on the coaching of Moonee Valley's Under 12s this season.
Dylan Pleban shows his bowling skills.And our two young English imports, James Wolfenden and Sean Duckworth, have put up their hands to coach our Under 10s.
All in all, the juniors will benefit from the increased senior interaction.

Moonee Valley Cricket Club trains at Ormond Park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. We have seven senior sides - four on turf and three on hard wicket, and a range of Saturday and Sunday games to suit all options.
