Our women win in their season debut

We might have been pushed up two divisions after our women's team won back-to-back premierships in Division 5, but our 2022/23 season started the same way our previous season finished - a good win.
The season start was pushed back a fortnight by the NWMCA due to sodden grounds and washed-out training sessions, but Moonee Valley's girls hit the ground running when the umpire was finally able to call play.
A good win in our season opener: L-R. Back - Sandra Verschoor, Sarah Fenn, coach Darren Nagle and senior coach Wasim Abbas. We were put in to bat in our Division 3 debut by Flemington Colts - who were promoted from Division 4 - on the all-synthetic ground at Holland Park in Kensington.
Moonee Valley had a couple of new players to go with the experienced hands from past seasons, and our new girls fitted in straight away.
We compiled a very solid 5/111 off our 20 overs, with captain Tara Newman top-scoring with 32no.
We then bowled Flemington out in 16.5 overs for 55. We were clinical in the field, with three run-outs - including direct hits from Tara Newman and Sarah Fenn, Sandra Verschoor took 1/1 off three overs and Charli D'Ambrosio took her maiden wicket for the Valley.
Coach Darren Nagle was very pleased with our season start in the higher grade - so bring on the next game.

WET WELCOME TO OUR NEW SEASON

The season launch, but no actual season yet! L-R Firsts captain Jack Newman, Suraj Weerasinghe and Wasim Abbas. We might have endured an unprecedented four weeks of washouts to start the 2022/23 cricket season, but that still didn't dampen the enthusiasm of players, supporters and past players at our season launch.
At left: The season launch, but no actual season yet! L-R Firsts captain Jack Newman, Suraj Weerasinghe and Wasim Abbas.

We marked the opening on October 22 with a day watching the Cox Plate on TV in the rooms, then leading in to the function and a delightful barbecue meal, thanks to Dean Lawson, Sandro Capocchi, John Talone and other members of the Past Players (and current ones too).
We welcomed back some old faces, and even celebrated with some new players who have not yet been able to pull on the Valley whites due to the washouts.
We've failed to get on the park for every fixtured senior game this season, although our Women's team was able to play the day after the season launch, and we had also been able to open our account in the NWMCA Twenty20 competition.

Moonee Valley cricket - junior and senior spots still available

Moonee Valley will welcome new senior and junior players for the 2022/23 season.
There are vacancies still in our Under 12 and Under 10 teams, which both play Friday evenings.
We have good squads of players for Under 16s and Under 14s, but can still top up with extra players. They are also Friday evening teams.
We have senior men's turf and hard wicket teams, playing in both Saturday and Sunday grades, as well as women's cricket. We can accommodate extra players in both men's and women's teams, so anyone interested in playing or making a comeback to cricket should get in touch.
Anyone interested in playing for Moonee Valley in the coming season - seniors, juniors or our premiership-winning women's team - can phone or text President Charlie Walker on 0411 705 381 or Vice President Mark Gauci on 0457 778 335.
