MOONEE VALLEY - BACK TO THE BEGINNING

Where we’ve come from over the past 50 years

More than 140 past and current players, partners and supporters gathered at our Ormond Park pavilion on February 25 for our Golden Jubilee celebration.
We honored Teams of the Decade for each of our five decades, and topped it off with a Team of the 50 Years to celebrate Moonee Valley’s greatest players.
Where it all began: From our first decade - the Team of the 70s. And the proceedings also saw the elevation of Moonee Valley Cricket Club’s first official Legend – the co-founder of our great club, Ray Storey.
Incredibly, six of the men who played with Ray in the 1970s and who made our first Team of the Decade were there to celebrate the occasion with him, as Ray gave a heart-felt response to the honor on behalf of wife Heather and himself.
We had past players from far and wide come to the function – many seeing our magnificent pavilion for the first time.

There was plenty of fond reminiscing about the old Dungeon – the first rooms for the club, and some not-so-fond remembrances of the glass-fronted rooms which replaced it, which were never fit for purpose.
Graeme Cornwill came across from Western Australia, and Shiwantha Kumara came up from Warrnambool for the night.
Our pavilion looked a treat, decked out under the watchful eye of Agatha Jukic, while the past players group played a big role in the organisation of the function and the catering. It had been three years in the planning – postponed across the two previous years because of the coronavirus pandemic – and the organising committee had worked tirelessly over the past few months to turn the celebration into reality.
Sandro Capocchi took control of the catering and engaged a company which provided an excellent meal, and Kevin Gardiner helped pull together as much memorabilia as he could. Sandro also did a masterful job as Master of Ceremonies, and kept the night ticking over.
The night saw 30 of our 37 Life Members in attendance – the biggest single gathering of LMs ever.
We’ve only had 10 Presidents across our 52-year history, and all eight living Presidents were at the celebration.
Our magnificent Team of the 50 Years, in batting order, is: Michael Harvey, Glen Courts, Warwick Nolan, Arosha Perera, Robert Lamberti, Greg Peters (capt), Ian Denny, Bill Nagel, Darren Nagle, Greg Meyers (wk), Terry Nagle. Amit Chaudhary 12^th.

DANNY, YOU'RE A MOONEE MARVEL!

Congratulations to Danny Terzini, who has become just the fourth player in our half century history to play 350 games.
Fittingly, Danny played his milestone match at his Ormond Park home – in the Fifths quarter final v Flemington Colts.
It wasn’t exactly the milestone game Danny was hoping for, as the match was abandoned only 14.4 overs in after ugly scenes while he was out in the middle batting with Dean Jukic.
Danny was in control at the time, on 32 off 36 balls and looking to steer the Valley to a sizeable total when the trouble boiled over. Throughout it all, he was the man to stay calm. Moonee Valley was awarded the match after an investigation, so Danny's season continues.

Only Ian Denny, Darren Nagle and Mark Gauci have played more games than Danny, who made his Valley debut on October 5, 1991.
Along the way, Danny has scored more than 6800 runs, captained a premiership side and was rewarded last season with his long-awaited debut game in the First Eleven.
Danny has a top score of 152 not out and has won three batting averages. He’s been four times selected as an MVP, and is a past winner of Moonee Valley Cricket Club’s highest honor – the Lindsay Jones award for best clubman.
He’s been selected three times in the Moonee Valley Wisden Team of the Year, and has twice been one of our five Wisden Players of the Year, including 2013/14 when he captained the Sixths to a breakthrough premiership.
Honored with Life Membership in 2008/09, Danny is truly a Moonee Valley great. Congratulations on the milestone Busy.

A FU NAFTERNOON FOR OUR LADIES DAY

More than 40 partners, players, parents, former players and friends attended the Moonee Valley Cricket Club Ladies Day Luncheon on February 4.
The boys had to give up the social rooms for the day, and the Firsts and Sixths were banished to the changerooms for the afternoon while the ladies dressed up and strutted their stuff. And so it should be.

The day raised funds for charity and was named for past MVCC women’s captain Tien Polonidis, who passed away in 2021. We also acknowledged past player Bernadette Hobbs, who passed away last year.
Our First Eleven captain Jack Newman was a driving force behind the luncheon, and received tremendous assistance from many other people, both inside and outside our club.
It gave a chance for partners and family to connect to the club – other than just watching the boys on game day. We’re hoping that it becomes a regular event.

Moonee Valley cricket - junior and senior spots

Moonee Valley always open to new senior and junior players, both for the current season and leading in to 2023/24.
We field men's teams on both turf and hard wicket, and both Saturday and Sunday grades.
Our women's cricket team plays in a Twenty20 competition on Sundays.
We have juniors at Under 16, Under 14, Under 12 and Under 10 level, and these teams play Friday evenings.
