Our girls can do it - again!!!!
Moonee Valley's Women's team made it two from two when they won their Premiership on March 13. For the second year in a row we were playing a team which finished top of the ladder, and against the odds won the game that really counted. What made the win even more meritorious was we were struggling for numbers at the start of the season and were only a minute from having to forfeit our first game - which may well have been the death knell for the season. But we got on the park - and the rest is history for back-to-back Premier-ships. We only had seven players for the Grand Final against Werribee - eight is a full team - after key player Sandra Verschoor injured her hamstring and knee when we played on a wet ground in the semi. Above: Premiers 2021/22! L-R. Back - co-coach Charlie Walker, Sandra Verschoor, Amber Dylan, Lane Edwards, co-coach Sarah Gooden, Audrey Brown, Sarah Fenn and co-coach Darren Nagle. Front - Kelsie Armstrong, Tara Newman and Yasmin King. But our women had a strong bond, and worked well together to post a competitive total of 115 off our 20 overs - helped by a strong finish of 45 runs off the last five overs. Werribee was always thereabouts in the run chase - but our last three overs - two from Yasmin King and one from captain Tara Newman - put the lid on them. Werribee only needed 27 off the last three overs with two of their bigger hitters at the crease - but we held our nerve and they fell short by seven runs, with some tight death-overs bowling. Premiers two years in a row - we're proud of you.
Our Fielding and MVP votes Moonee Valley held our Fielding and Most Valuable Player vote counts at Ormond Park on March 13, and there was plenty of support for the contenders as the votes were counted out by Club Treasurer Peter Golding. Peter went through the fielding awards for each grade, then moving on to the MVP. The biggest cheers for the night were reserved for Life Member Shaun Rayment, whose dominant season with with the keeping gloves and in the field earned him the fielding awards for both the Sixths and Sevenths.
Our winners were: Firsts - MVP Sam Younghusband; Fieldlow Jack Newman. Women's - MVP Tara Newman; Fieldlow Sarah Fenn. Seconds - MVP Mitchell Britton; Fieldlow Eamon O'Toole. Thirds - MVP Sunny Singh; Fieldlow Jim Polonidis. Fourths - MVP James Smith; Fieldlow Sam Carbone. Fifths - MVP Sam Kater; Fieldlow Sam Kater. Sixths - MVP David Lubansky; Fieldlow Shaun Rayment. UNDER 14s DO US PROUD
Moonee Valley's Under 14 team carried all before them during the 2021/22 season, and the Grand Final on March 11 was no exception. Having earned the right for a home final at Ormond Park, our boys (and girl) were in the field after losing the toss to Pascoe Vale Hadfield in the Friday evening grade. We quickly had them on the back foot at 3 for 4, then they consolidated to be 9/89 at the end of their 20 overs. Moonee Valley was dynamic in the field, letting nothing through and effecting four runouts. Moonee Valley was solid and purposeful in reply, losing our first wicket at 31 and the second at 63 before pulling stumps at 6/104 after 17 overs. We were the best team all season - and our skill right across the 15-player squad was strengthened by seven players having senior experience. The win was our first junior flag since an Under 14 premiership in 2017/18, and only the second since an Under 12 win in 2011/12. Moonee Valley's Under 12 Friday team also played off in a Grand Final on March 11, but fell short by 26 runs. Above: Our Under 14s did us proud: L-R: Back - Katherine Baker, Lucas Tipper, coach/team manager David Baker, Mark Lubansky, Jordy Walsh, Harper Eason, Diego Surace, Jeremy Sevenson, Antonio Baldino, Dante Mazzarella, training coach Jack Newman. Front - Eden Del Citto, Angus Hughes, Zac Nilsson, Max Talone, Hayagreev Bashyam, Rushil Gundubilli.
