PLENTY TO CHEER ABOUT AT OUR VALLEY CHRISTMAS PARTY The Moonee Valley Thirds put on a great show as the main entertainment for our 2013 Christmas Party. We didn't win, but an excellent late innings effort ensured that our opponents, Reds, couldn't get us all out, and as a result we took a point away from the game. It also happened to be Bede Gannon's 100th senior game. Bad luck we couldn't salute your milestone with a victory, Bede, but it was still a worthy contribution to a career which is still young. Senior and junior players, parents, family and supporters gathered for the Christmas party, in the clubrooms on Sunday, December 22. We must have been 'cricketed out', because we struggled to find interest in the intraclub Twenty20 game we had planned for the adjacent oval. Many thanks to Life Member Danny Terzini for his tireless efforts in organising our big raffle and booking and collecting most of the food. Thanks also to Mick Cumbo for cooking the wood-fired barbecue, to Pat and Jessie Taylor for running the canteen, and to Simon Thornton and his group of helpers for staffing the bar. It was also a big weekend for team success, with all of the six senior teams competing, other than the Thirds, recording wins. And the Fifths won their last pre-Christmas match the previous Sunday! To top it off, the Under 16s, Under 14s and both Under 12 teams also brought up victories. This leaves us all in a positive frame of mind to start the second half of the season. Wardy's wed! Congratulations to Moonee Valley's Stephen Ward on his wedding in December. Wardy's nuptials, and his preceding buck's night out, meant a fair bit of juggling with the Moonee Valley teams as we needed to ensure that we weren't left short of players. Mission accomplished - both with the juggling and with Wardy's marriage to Fiona. It's part of the reason why we haven't seen Wardy on the playing field quite as often this season - as we all know that he is keen to pull on the whites at every opportunity. As well as captaining our inaugural Winter Comp team, Stephen captained the Seconds for the 2012/13 season. He was always first to put his hand up to play a second game on a Sunday, and was also inked in for every Twenty20 fixture. Now he's officially got other responsibilities - but we're sure Wardy will be building on his games tally at Moonee Valley after Christmas - and will continue to be the committed clubman he's been since joining us from Sydenham Hillside some four seasons ago. Congratulations from all of us! ****For more pictures, see our News pages.
Brock solid effort Any day or night you're down at Ormond Park, chances are you'll catch sight of Paul Brock. He's got three up-and-coming young stars playing for Moonee Valley this season, and Paul is certainly an involved parent - and not just for the sake of his own three. He stepped up his role in helping run our juniors during junior co-ordinator Kevin Gardiner's recent illness, and hasn't backed off at any stage of the season. Moonee Valley is certainly lucky that we lured the Brocks across from Doutta Stars at the start of the 2013/14 season. Oldest son Luke is a quick bowler with our Under 16s, and has also taken good bags of wickets with our turf senior sides - the Thirds and the Fifths. He's also playing representative cricket, with Brunswick Hatch. Son Corey is a mainstay of our Under 14s, and is playing Under 12 representative cricket for the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association. Daughter Olivia is also in our Under 14s, plays senior women's cricket for Brunswick and is in the Under 16 rep team. Moonee Valley is also fortunate to be able to call on Paul's experience and dedication as a member of the NWMCA Junior Committee - along with our President Charlie Walker - with a strong focus on representative cricket. With his watchful eye over the talent at Moonee Valley, it's probably no coincidence that a strong contingent of our juniors are making their mark in representative teams this season. Above right: The Brock cricketers: L-R Olivia, Luke, Paul and Corey. On one recent weekend Paul watched around 300 overs of cricket - both with Moonee Valley and representative matches. That's dedication for you - and dedication we're fortunate to have in our Club. And that's not all! Paul was lured by Steven Ball to play a couple of one-day games for Moonee Valley in 2005/06 - and since bringing his family across to the Valley this season has pulled on the whites a couple more times when needed to round out a team. Thanks Paul for your terrific work for our Club. Where there's smoke, Club season membership and affiliation payments Main Club contact details: Charlie Walker - President 0409 237 543; 9370 1802 |
