One of Moonee Valley’s most popular players, Michael Cumbo, had a day out at Ormond Park in the Round 4 match on November 3.

Opening the batting, Mick (right) flayed his first half-century for the Club, with a hard-hitting and adventurous 79 as he helped bat the Fourths into a strong position against Royal Park Reds.

Mick’s pull shot was particularly effective, as he peppered the boundaries during his great innings. In his 75th game for Moonee Valley’s the Mickster’s previous highest score was in the mid-30s.

He has always showed the potential to go on and post a bigger total, but has tended to hit out and try and push the pace before he is properly set.

But Mick didn’t give Royal Park the chance to claim his wicket, and led Moonee Valley to a solid total of 286.

One of Moonee Valley's most-admired players, Mick is also a handy bowler. He took a hat-trick in the 5ths against Socials in 2003/04, when he dropped down a grade due to non-availability for the second day of a two-day game.

His contribution has been recognised by the Club, which has honored Mickster by naming the Under 12 Green bowling award the Michael Cumbo Trophy.

He’s also a sharp fielder, renowned for taking absolute blinders that are flying off the bat on the way to the boundary. He’s set to put his fielding skills to good use in the second day of the two-day game as he helps Moonee Valley defend its total.

Mick's just as popular back at the clubrooms on match report nights, when he's invariably called on to describe and act out in great detail the catches that won the matches. Well done Mick Cumbo!
