Celebrating the Fourths' Fabulous Season
Grand Finalists: (L-R) Ben Thomas, Rajat Sharma (rear, who did not play), captain Rahul "Sunny" Sharma (front), Tim Fisher, William Lai, Bob Sciacchitano, Jesse Felle, Murray Walker, Steven Ball, Nigel Walker.
The Fourth Eleven had a terrific 2006/07 season, and won its way through to the MMVCA C Matting Grand Final.
Having finished the season in fourth spot, we won through to the big game at Rayner Reserve with a strong win over top-placed Royal Park Reds in the semi.
Celebrating back at Ormond Park after the match were (L-R) Tom King, Adele Walker, Matt Thomas, and Kristie Wall with her cousins Nigel and Murray Walker.
There was no provision for a compulsory closure in the Grand Final under MMVCA rules, so Moonee Valley was at a disadvantage in that St Francis could bat us out of the match.
Accordingly, when he won the toss captain Sunny Sharma sent St Francis in to bat. At least that way we would have a target set.
It has hard work on a hot first day, but we eventually got St Francis all out on Day 2.
Unfortunately we had lost seven wickets by the end of the second day's play, and were under the eight-ball going in to the third day's play - the Monday of the Labor Day long weekend.
We had a valiant lower order partnership between Steven Ball and Murray Walker, but once Murray went out for 34, the end was near.
After the match, players and supporters headed back to Ormond Park to celebrate what had been a great season for both seniors and juniors at Moonee Valley.
Back at Ormond Park: (L-R) Eighths captain Brett Curran with his players Alan Harry, Dean Lawson and Mark Madden, and Kevin Gardiner.
The Seconds had lost their semi-final on the Saturday, while the Mighty Fighting Eighths had also come up short in their Quarter Final.
